Well I am sure that everyone has read much and seen many photos of Shwedagon which depict all it splendour. The descriptions of the site are well and truly justified and it does deserve the ranking some people have given it as the "16th wonder of the world"! There is no other place I have been to that matches it in terms of sheer size, splendour and lack of commerciality. I have certainly not been to any other religious site of significance where there has been so many local people praying, pouring water over their birth day Buddha, having a "picnic" or simply meditating.

Luckily, we were there for a couple of hours before it poured down so we were able to take some reasonable photos. However, when it rained Shwedagon took on a new surreal ambience and became for us even more special and sacred.
