Malliag is still an important fishing port, the village is small with a few shops for essentials, some good fish restaurants and various B & B's and a couple of hotels. The main interest and reason to be here is the Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries which go to and fro to Skye. The railway station is where you might see the Jacobite train as it arrives in the village from Fort Wiliam. We sat near the harbour opposite the tourist information place, which by the way has everything from maps to coffee and the internet, and watched a seagull trying very hard to raid a bin. The Gaelic word for rubbish or litter is Sgudal but I think the word suited our seagull. He must have been the most photographed seagull in the world as almost every tourist who happened to walk past snapped him as he tried every angle imaginable to get some food. I found it very hard to take a picture as I was laughing so much at his anticts. Finally he succeeded in getting a crisp bag which he prompty put on his head only to be outdone by a cheeky sparrow who had joined in the spoils as the crisps dropped to the ground below. A truely delightful experience.
