Monasteries sit just inside the two main gates of Dubrovnik - The Franciscans at the eastern end, near the Pile Gate, and the Dominicans in the west - near the Ploce Gate. Their presence here was to enhance the protection of the city - the reasoning being that these men-only communities would be on hand to defend the city in times of need - not exactly a spiritual reasoning, but definitely pragmatic!

Both are plain, even austere buildings on the outside - and both have at their hearts
beautiful arcaded cloisters with lovely gardens and exquisite architectural detailing. The churches of both have simple, elegant interiors, as befits monastic churches. To see them at their best, you really do need to be there either early or late in the day. The tranquil atmosphere they both exude then is perfect - you can easily imagine yourself back in another world.
