Very small, with only one or two paved streets and walkable in 10 minutes, this cute village has a spectacular setting - it extends along a beautiful strip of sandy beach with high peaks and dense tropical forest rising in the back. Abraao has a perfectly laid back atmosphere where most things are better to be put off till amanha. There are no 5-star hotels, only a number of pousadas, a youth hostel and a camping site. This doesn't mean there's no choice regarding price and quality - some of pousadas look quite fancy, almost a bit too much for the setting. Since this is the only settlement on Ilha Grande with any substantial lodging capacities to talk about, the island probably doesn't get very crowded even in the South American summer holiday season (Dec-Feb). We were there in October and it was pretty quiet, though not deserted in Abraao, while most of the island's beaches were almost completely empty. The centre of Abraao is a little square with the cute white church you can see on the picture and from this point trails all over the island start (there's a big map of the island in front of the square).
