The Eiserner Steg is a pedestrian bridge, which was built two decades prior to the Eiffeltower! It connects the old city of Frankfurt with Sachsenhausen and has most of the time been for pedestrians only!
There is a Greek verse of Homer's Ilias spanned across the bridge, saying:
"ΠΛΕΟΝ ΕΠΙ ΟΙΝΟΠΑ ΠΟΝΤΟΝ ΕΠ ΑΛΛΟΘΡΟΟΥΣ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΥΣ", which translates into something like 'sailing across wine colored seas towards people of different tongues' - but that banner is not really old, it is a relict of one of the museums festivals.
