"Windmills" Netherlands Things to Do Tip by lukec

Netherlands Things to Do: 794 reviews and 1,030 photos

Windmills are a Dutch trademark and even if you don't like stereotypes they are nice to see, especially if they're standing somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Windmills were once used for pumping all the excess water to the North See (remember that almost half of Holland is below sea level), but they have outlived this job which is now performed by electric pumps and serve as a tourist attraction. Every windmill is a bit different and some of them are very old. A well known group of windmills is at Kinderdijk, north of Amsterdam.
