"Writers' Museum" Writers' Museum Tip by Esther180

Writers' Museum, Edinburgh: 10 reviews and 15 photos

The Writers' Museum is situated off of the Royal Mile in Lady Stair's Close. It's dedicated to three prominent and well-regarded Scottish authors - Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Walter Scott. On display are letters, portraits, manuscripts, and various objects associated with the authors, such as the desks on which they wrote and the tables on which they ate.

Visiting the museum gave me a more tangible feel of the lives of these authors - their thoughts, hobbies, habits. After the bustle and crowds of the Royal Mile, it was a relief to slip into the quiet of the museum, which is laid out in an old 17th century house with creaky stairs and small rooms.

The museum will be an enjoyment particularly to people with a literary and/or historical interest in Scottish authors and their contributions. But even if you're not well-versed in Scottish literature, the museum can still be of interest and give you a glimpse of an important facet of Scottish culture.
