There rarely is a city with more historical significance in Germany than Nürnberg: The rich indepent merchant city of the Middle Ages with trade connections all - over Europe, and a vibrant, innovative art "scene" (Albrecht Dürer, Veit Stoss, Hans Sachs) sponsored by the immensely rich city patricians, represents the more romantic image of Nürnberg. In a more recent, darker phase of its history, the Nazis favoured Nürnberg as the city of their propagandistic mass events, held at the "Reichsparteitagsgelände". Nürnberg was then reduced to rubble in World War 2 bombings.

Despite this, Nürnberg has saved much of its heritage and is to this day a fascinating showcase into the Middle Ages. The Kaiserburg, the medieval churches, the treasures of the "Germanisches Nationalmuseum", the Dürerhaus, the picturesque views of the Spital building and the architectural ensemble around the "Henkersteg" bridge alone deserve a visit. A rather unknown gem is the suburb of St. Johannis with its historical graveyard (Dürer-grave) and the Hesperid baroque gardens.
