"Redefining "authentic" chinese food" Beijing Restaurant Tip by rajiv00

This is not for any particular restaurant but for those that tend to get trapped in tourist lairs. As a college program, on our 2nd day in Beijing, we were taken to this fancy "local" Chinese restaurant where chopsticks were no where to be seen on the table. That in itself, was not a good sign at all. The food was bland, expensive and the whole experience was a big blah.

So the next day, my group (of 4 and I), decided to take matters in our own hands. We hopped onto a random metro line, got off at a random metro stop, walked deep into a neighborhood and sat down in the first eating joint that we could find.

Here, we were the only non-locals and it felt so good. We ordered by pointing to 1 dish from each section of the menu. We did know how to say "vegetarian" and got a few from that section.

The food turned out to be excellent. We were a little scared, that we might get some "crazy" dishes, but the vegetables, rice and meat dishes were all yummy. The total was like $18 for all 5 of us.

We were proud of our little creative adventure in the quest for hard to find authentic Chinese food in Beijing!!!!

Price Comparison: less expensive than average
Price: less than US$10
