Hverir (also known as Namaskard) is a sulphur field right on the main road. There is a large parking area and then you are right beside the boiling mud pools and sulphur gases. The colours are wonderful and the smell is awful. The area is on the eastern side of the Namafall which is 432 metres high, at a depth of 1000 metres underground the temperatures reach 200 degress c. You can walk around the area as there paths but do be careful to stay behind the ropes around the pools - the ground is crumbly and accidents do happen. There is a footpath up the slope of the mountain and it is worth climbing. Until 1940 the sulphur was harvested here and sent to Denmark from the harbour at Husavik.
Address: cannot be missed
Directions: on the mian road from Egilsstadir to Myvatn.
