  the 1425 belltower
by call_me_rhia

The "Sioni" Cathedral of the Dormition is a Georgian Orthodox Cathedral in Tbilisi, dating back to the 6th-7th centuries. Distructed and reconstructed severall times, the present building (with its recent changes) is nothing to write home about.

The cathedral is worth a mention because of its two bell towers - one of which of incredible beauty. I'm talking about the free-standing belltower in the courtyard, three-story high dating back to 1425.

The second belltower is lacated across the street, and it's less interesting. It's three-story high, too and was built in 1812 in neoclassical stryle to commemorate the Russian victory over Ottoman Turkey.

Address: Sionis Kucha
Directions: in the old town
