Try to find a member of one of the yacht clubs along the Toronto/Scarborough/Etobicoke waterfront, and get invited out for either an evening at the clubhouse, or preferably, an evening out on their boat. However, a quiet night by the lake is just lovely, however you spend it.
I went to one of the Scarborough Bluffs yacht clubs with a group from the office where I'm working. One of the ladies, and her hubby, have a boat and a membership. We had a night out because of the visit of one of our Calgary colleagues, and the club has a good restaurant. Prices were extremely good, as was the quality of the food, and selection.
It was a lovely calm, warm but not too warm evening we were there, and just felt like we were a milion miles from the city.
One of the young ladies in our group is getting married and is considering having her reception (and maybe even the wedding) at the yacht club - there are processes to go through for this, and I imagine each club has their own procedure to follow.
Equipment: You may need a sweater/jacket if you are going out, as it does tend to be much cooler by the lake. Check to see if there is a dress-code for dining at the club - this one didn't seem to have one. Also, if you are going out on the boat, wear soft-soled shoes that won't damage the deck or have you slipping, and comfortable clothing as you don't want to be hopping on/off the boat in clothes that don't let you "hop".
Oh, and remember the rule - water on the water, and beer on the pier. (Do find a nice yacht club that serves Guinness, and has a good bartender. We did!)
Address: Toronto waterfront
Directions: In this case it was at Scarborough Bluffs Park - the bottom of Brimley Road.
