Originally the Clydesdale horse drawn carriage, which was built in 1875, was used to carry wheat from the stream train to waiting ships that were from all over the world. Today the horses are kept busy transporting close to 135,000 tourists to and from the Island. There are 2 horse who share this responsibility and the causeway is lined down the middle with a soft rubber to protect their feet. Today it is the only horse drawn carriage in Australia and is one of only a few in the world.
