Like in the rest of Malaysia's colonial cities, the Padang used to be the centre of civic life during the Imperial times: the administrative buildings stood here and the central field (padang in Malay) was used for cricket matches (a British sport).

Today the Padang has been renamed as Independence Square (Dataran Merdeka) and has preserved some of the most interesting and old buildings in the city, surrounded by the tall skyscrapers of the financial district.
