The Museum of Fine Arts in Tournai was the smallest and last of the many fine art museums that I visited in Belgium. At 700 pieces it gives you an idea how big some of the art galleries are in Belgium if this is the small I visited. Many of the many fine Flemish artist of Belgium are represented here. The Virgin and the Child by Roger van der Weyden is probably the most famous artwork here. There is also a good collection of French impressionists works by the likes of Manet, Monet and Seurat. You can also see a Van Gogh and my favourite 19th century Belgium artist, James Ensor. Sadly the one problem with this museum is that the works you see by these illustrious painters are nowhere near their best. Hence it is a borderline must-see. Sadly it does not seem to receive much in the way of visitors. I was virtually the only person in the gallery during my visit. Surprising because it is not expensive at 4 Euros.
Finally the building itself is quite renown. It is a creation of architect Victor Hora in 1928. It is a star shaped building which is illuminated by natural light. Quite amazing because it is really bright inside.
The Museum of Fine Arts is open from 10am to noon and from 2pm to 5:30pm. It is closed on Tuesday.
