How do you prevent the local farmers' cattle or sheep from trespassing on your beautiful garden? There is no gate to stop them and a traffic sign 'No cattle' in whatever form wouldn't do much good. But there is an ingenious solution to the problem. Look at the crossing in the picture - no cow or sheep can negotiate it without risking breaking a leg while cars get across it easily and so can people, although there is a separate gate for them.
I'm sure Broughton Castle is not the only place where you can find this 'cattle trap' (cattle grid - thank you scottishvisitor) but since I took the picture there here it is. I hope nobody will mind.
