"Harney Peak" Top 5 Page for this destination South Dakota Things to Do Tip by Florida999

South Dakota Things to Do: 177 reviews and 272 photos

At 7242 feet, Harney Peak is the highest mountain in South Dakota. Of course we had to hike to the top! There is a large tower on the top and you have a great view of the Black Hills.

The trails start at Sylvan Lake and form a loop, if you want to walk back a different way than up. It is a little longer this way, but worth the effort. The # 4 trail was nicer in my opinion, but probably better for the way back, since most of it is uphill ( from Sylvan Lake). The # 9 trail goes up and down. Not the most demanding hike, but it is about 8 miles round trip.

Note: if you walk back on the # 4 trail, you will get to the wrong parking lot first, make sure you continue on the correct trail to the Sylvan Lake parking lot!
