"HOW TO MAKE A RESERVATION AT A RESTAURANT" Local Information Tip by thinking

Local Information, Paris: 34 reviews and 38 photos

Restaurants are open for only a few hours for lunch and dinner and because meals are long affairs here, it's always wisest to make reservations.
Here are a few key sentences, if needed, for booking:
"Bonjour madame/monsieur (hello, ma'am/sir; say bonsoir after 6 PM).
Je voudrais faire une reservation pour
(I would like a reservation for)
un/une (1)/deux (2)/quatre (4)/six (6) personnes pour le diner
(persons for dinner)(le déjeuner (lunch) aujourd'hui à X heures (today at X o'clock)/demain à X heures (tomorrow at X o'clock)lundi (Monday)mardi (Tuesday)mercredi (Wednesday)jeudi (Thursday)vendredi (Friday)samedi (Saturday)dimanche (Sunday) à X heures (at X time).
Le nom est
(your own name).
Merci bien."
Note that most wine bars do not take reservations;
reservations are also unnecessary for brasserie and café meals at odd hours.

Favorite Dish: Smoking
You can count on it: Parisians smoke before, during, and after meals.
Restaurants are supposed to have no-smoking sections -- if you want to sit in one, make this clear at the outset -- though these areas are often limited to a very few tables where the no-smoking policy is not strictly monitored. A few places, most notably L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, have forbidden smoking in the interests of their guests' palates.

What to Wear

Casual dress is acceptable at all but the fanciest restaurants. Be aware that in Paris, however, casual usually means stylish sportswear, which is often more dressed up than you may be used to. When in doubt, leave the blue jeans and sneakers behind and go for a sweater or button-down rather than a T-shirt. If an establishment requires jacket and tie, it is noted in the reviews.
