I stayed at Skandia Sommerpensjonat for 4 nights during my visit to Bergen in July 2006.

Budget accommodation is scarce in Bergen, particularly in the busy summer months, and this place represents a very good budget option in a convenient central location.

I paid 375 NOK per night for a single room (shared bathroom), making this a very affordable option and far cheaper than most hotels in the town.

However, this price included nothing but the room. Bed linen cost an additional 60 NOK and a towel cost an extra 15 NOK. These costs are a one off and are not incurred for each day of your stay.

Double rooms cost 500 NOK per night.

Location

Skandia Sommerpensjonat is located on Kong Oscars gate, close to the touristy centre of Bergen. Walking along Kong Oscars gate brings you to the bustling harbour, the fish market and Bryggen in under 5 minutes. There are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants within a 2 minute walk of the hotel.

Hotel

According to the hotel's website (which for the large part is in Norwegian only), Skandia is only open to guests between 15th June and 13th August, catering to the influx of summer tourist crowds. I noticed that some of the rooms there had people's names on the doors, indicating that people actually live there permanently.

The rooms are located on several floors and are serviced by one small (and somewhat rickety) lift. I usually used the stairs to get to my second floor room.

The hotel has a small reception area staffed by friendly staff (who, like the majority of Norwegians, speak almost perfect English), as well as a communal kitchen (on the second floor) and an outdoor terrace on which to enjoy your breakfast (not included in the price) or just to sit and soak up the sun.

Guests receive a keycard which gives them access to the hotel after reception closes (at 11pm) and to their rooms.

Unique Qualities: .

Bedroom

My single room was sparsely furnished, but was clean and comfortable.

It contained a sofa bed, a table and chair, a desk and chair, a wardrobe, a radiator, a washbasin, a mirror and a handful of lamps. It also had a large window which gave the room a lot of natural light. The lock on the window was broken and so the window was held open by the strategic placing of a paper cup between the window and its frame! Apart from that, the maintenance of the room was pretty good.

The room didn't contain a fridge, which would have been appreciated due to the need for cold drinks caused by the warm weather during my stay. I believe that double rooms contain both a fridge and rudimentary cooking facilities.

The communal toilets and shower room for the second floor were just a few steps from my bedroom, as was the communal kitchen. The bathroom facilities were spotlessly clean and were always vacant when I required their use.

A good value budget option in the heart of Bergen! The main tourist sites are just minutes away on foot. However, it appears that Skandia opens only for a few summer months each year....but I would check this directly with the hotel. Recommended for budget travellers!!
