Dragon Bridge - Zmajski Most, Ljubljana: 52 reviews and 101 photos

This bridge replaced an older wooden bridge called the Butcher's Bridge which was built in 1819. The current bridge was built between the years 1900 to 1901 under the name of Jubilee Bridge, and was Slovenia's first bridge with an asphalt paving. It is one of Ljubljana's most representative examples of Art Nouveau architecture, the city's first reinforced concrete bridge, and one of the first bridges of its kind in Europe. The four copper dragons depict the symbol of Ljubljana and were designed by architect Jurij ZaninoviŠ. The original designed were actually based on winged lions and not dragons and it is said by locals that the dragons wag their tails whenever a virgin crosses the bridge.
