"Monumental!" Museum Island Museumsinsel Tip by MichaelFalk1969

Museum Island Museumsinsel, Berlin: 46 reviews and 76 photos

The island features several of the best Berlin museums, though it is currently a "work in progress": The "Neues Museum" is not open to the public due to renovation. There are daytickets that allow you to visit all exhibitions on one ticket (though I would rather recommend seeing one museum a day).

Highlights:
1. The Alte Nationalgalerie: mainly 18/19th century paintings in a neo-classical museum building. The best art museum in Germany. View the romantic paintings of Caspar David Friedrich and Schinkel.
2. Pergamonmuseum: A history museum with the monumental altar of Pergamon and a Babylonian Lion Gate (Ishtar Gate)
3. Altes Museum: sculptures from antiquity, sometimes special exhibitions. At the moment hosting the Egyptian Collection which will be removed to the "Neues Museum" in 2009.
4. Bodemuseum: reopened in 2006 - fantastic sculpture collection.
