  Rotorua Bathhouse
by Bernd_L

The city of Rotorua is the center of the Maori culture. The name means 'badly smelling place' and you know instantly the reason as soon as you open the door of your car. All the volcanic activity at and around Rotorua produces sulphur gas. And that's the reason of the smell like rotten eggs.

But this should not keep you from visiting Rotorua. The city has a lot to offer especially if you are interested in the culture of New Zealands first settlers, the Maori. Coming from warmer areas in the Pacific, those people were looking for a place with moderate climate. And the geothermal activity around Rotorua provided this.

Rotoruas most photographed attraction however has been build by english immigrants in the early 20th century - the Bathhouse. This wonderful building is located in a lush park and served as a spa until 1966. Nowadays it houses the Rotorua museum which offers permanent exhibitions about the history and culture of the Rotorua region.

Directions: in the center of North Island - accessible from Auckland via highway #1 and #5
