  Lake Taupo
by Bernd_L

Right in the center of North Island is the biggest lake of New Zealand. Lake Taupo is the result of an enormous volcanic eruption that created a crater that had been filled with water. Considering that Lake Taupo is 40 km long and 29 km wide you can imagine the power of the eruption.

Lake Taupo is a paradise for all sorts of watersports and in particular famous for trout fishing.

Another attraction is the flight with a water aircraft to the nearby Tongariro National Park whos majestic volcanos build the background of the scenery if you look from Taupo town over the lake.

Directions: Right in the center of North Island - accessibly by highway #1 from Auckland and Wellington
