Tunisia Things to Do: 757 reviews and 1,154 photos

If you visit a few towns in Tunisia you'll begin to notice many of the same names on all the streets, squares and parks in different towns.

Almost every town has an Avenue Bourguiba, named after Habib Bourguiba who ruled Tunisia after independence in 1956 until 1987.

Place 7 Novembre is a very common name for squares in Tunisia - I think this was the date when the current president, Ben Ali, seized power in 1987.

And so on....many other streets are named after other Tunisian leaders, or holy men or important military dates. Though it's not all political - Tunisia's most famous poet, Abou el Kacem Chabbi is remembered in many towns.

And then there are streets whose names haven't changed since French colonial times such as boulevard de l'Environnement, rue Charles de Gaulle (though not too many of these!), and rue de Marseille.
