Emerson & Green: "Traditional Zanzibar style hotel" Zanzibar Town Hotel Tip by Veghel
Zanzibar Town Hotels: 32 reviews and 62 photos
I stayed in Emerson & Green for 3 nights late July 2006. Everything about the hotel is very good. The rooms, though not luxurious, are spacious and clean. As the hotel is built into three adjacent old buildings, every room is very unique. The furniture and style are typical for romantic Zanzibar as it once was. All rooms but 3 or 4 have airconditioning. All rooms have their own name, which can be found on the floor plans attached to this tip. Prices per room per night including breakfast varied from US$ 110 for Kipembe, via US$ 165 for West and South to US$ 200 for the suites. We stayed in Kipembe, West and South. For pictures and a detailed description of these rooms, see my separate tips.
The service is excellent and, like everywhere in Tanzania, people are very friendly and helpful. Emerson & Green is situated in the center of Stone Town (or Zanzibar Town), close to the harbour, the House of Wonders and all the shops and restaurants.
There are a few disadvantages however. First, close to the hotel are many mosques, and their noise around 5 a.m. is very loud and annoying. Bring ear plugs! Second, Emerson & Green is situated in a narrow street, surrounded by a labyrinth of numerous other narrow streets, partly not illuminated at night. Though there is a short and illuminated route to more comfortable parts of the town, the hotel recommends their guests not to go out at night alone. The hotel offers guides who bring you to a restaurant and take you back afterwards. If you arrive by ferry after 6.30 p.m., I recommend a taxi as the 1 km walk from the harbour to the hotel may not give you a comfortable feeling.
Unique Qualities: The hotel has a marvellous roof top restaurant with stunning 360 deg views on Stone Town. The restaurant is used for breakfast and dinner. For dinner, reservations a few days in advance appeared to be very necessary. See for more information about the restaurant my separate restaurant tip.
