Shamwari is a well-managed private game reserve near Addo National Park. The owner bought a large area of land to reintroduce once extinct south african animal species there. Now Shamwari has the Big Five (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo) and even rare animals like the African wild dog. Unlike the state-run parks, you cannot self-drive in Shamwari; you have to book a game drive with a park ranger in an open safari jeep. The advantage is that all rangers stay in radio contact which makes it easier for them to locate the most interesting animals.

You can choose if you book a daytrip to Shamwari (meal is included) or if you stay there overnight. The accomodation seemed a bit too posh for the likes of us, so we decided to just book the affordable and very enjoyable daytrip.
