  statue of Erasmus
by sachara

In the shade of the St Laurens Church stands the oldest statue in the city. It's the in Rotterdam born Desiderius Erasmus (1467-1536), being the best known scholar, philosopher and humanist in his times.

For more than 350 years Erasmus stands here, staring at the book in his hands. The bronze statue, green by the centuries of humid weather, is designed by architect Hendrik de Keijser for the City Council and unveiled in 1622. It replaced a 60 years older wooden statue that couldn’t withstand the time.

The name of Erasmus is connected with the city of Rotterdam. The Erasmus university and the Erasmus bridge carry his name. In his time Erasmus himself added Roterodamus to his name.
