The park is a mountain area between the Skeidararjokull and the Skaftafelljokull two beautiful glaciers. The area has been a National Park since 1967. This National Park can only be explored on foot and there are fantastic walks set out through the park. The walks are all clearly marked and of various lengths and difficulty grades. We chose to walk to the Svartifoss waterfall and then on to Sjonarypa which gives a wonderful views of Skeidarasandur, the Skaftafellsjokull and the Hvannadalshnukurwhich is 2119 metres high and the highest top in Iceland. The walk from the visitors centre to Svartifoss takes above an hour and a half and the start of the climb is a bit steep, but you do get wonderful views. (for more about Svartifoss see my tip of the waterfall). From there you can decide to go back to the visitors centre or go on to Sjonarnypa another 90 minutes or so. I would definitely suggest you do the extra walk as the views are wonderful.
There is a large parking are near the visitors centre where there is also a camping site. The visitors centre is open from 8-21 in June - August and from 10-15 in May and September.
