The CAT high speed ferry is--I believe--the fastest ferry in use. It used to be that the ferries available would take 8 hours to travel between Maine and Nova Scotia. It now takes 3 hours from Bar Harbor, ME and Yarmouth, NS. You can also pick it up from Portland, ME. Allow for at least 1 week advance for reservations. You will pay for convenience. The CAT is not cheap. $140 roundtrip during peak season. (You can purchase a one way ticket if you wish.) $210 to bring your car, that cost is in addition to the ticket for yourself and everyone else in your party. The cost is well worth the ride at least once in your life! The CAT is a pretty impressive example of speed and power on the open seas. Stand out back on the open observation deck at the stern of the craft. (It is usually foggy crossing over, but some days it's clear.) Inside there are plenty of movies playing, tables or chairs to sit at. Lavatory accomodations are clean and well maintained. Food is readily available and sits somewhere between sort of healthy and not so much. But better than your standard "travel" food. The mostly Canadian staff is extremely friendly and helpful with any questions you might have regarding Canada.

There is duty free shopping available on board. You can purchase with either the US or Candian dollar, but all prices are in US funds. Slot machines are also on board if you're looking for more to do. The CAT really makes getting to NS quick and simple and it's a lot of fun. However, plan carefully as you will discover that your vacation will be at the mercy of the CAT's schedule. It only makes 1 to 2 departures a day depending on which day and it does not run on the weekends to Bar Harbor. Free parking is available at the Bar Harbor terminal if you wish to leave your car in the States.
