The parks in Grünerlřkka is one of several reasons why you should pay the district a visit.

Grünerlřkka has 3 different parks. None of them far from each other. They are not like Frognerparken with amazing statues or anything, but always with a lot of real people instead.

OLAF RYES PLASS is the smallest, but maybe the best. At least for just sitting on a bench and watching passing people. In the center of the park, it is a fountain, and usually children playing. The park is surrounded by buildings, I guess mostly build around 1900. It is therefore also surrounded by cafés, restaurants and shops. At the north end of the park, it is also a outdoor café. At the south end of the park, there is often drunk people, but they are harmless and have there own square in the park.

BIRKELUNDEN is the second largest park. Here there are more people lying down in the grass than at Olaf Ryes plass. At least on sunny sommerdays. During the summer half-year, there is an anthique-market here on Sundays. You get a nice view of the beautiful church Paulus kirke from Birkelunden.

SOFIENBERGPARKEN is definately the largest. It is on the west side of Grünerlřkka. This park is long, and in summerdays the grass is full of people lying there for hours. And people playing badminton or football. It is even ping-pong-tables there. And a kindergarden, and a church. This park used to be a bit dodgy, but not any more. Still, I prefer both Birkelunden and Olaf Ryes plass.

Directions: Take tram number 11, 12 or 13 to Olaf Ryes plass (or the next stop; Birkelunden). Or you could walk the distance from the city center, it is not too long.
