"Shark Diving" South Africa Things to Do Tip by MichaelFalk1969

The town Gaansbai near Hermanus is the world capital in Shark Cage Diving. My advice: Stay rather in Hermanus than in Gaansbai, it is much nicer and every Tour Operator offers a shuttle pickup to Gaansbai. Usually you have daytrips for of price of ca. 150,- ? per person. It is worth every penny. There are ca. 8 tour operators in Gaansbai. We went with White Shark Eco Ventures and these guys were really good. The term "Cage Diving" is strictly speaking not correct, as you just snorkel while being in the cage. The cage is not freefloating but secured against the boat. The shark is attracted to the boat by a kind of blood/fish entrail bait. Usually he surfaces near the boat and surfaces long enough so you can admire him, take some pictures and wave him goodbye. Most sharks come rather close to the cage so you can appreciate them very closely. But they are just curious, they do not attack the cage. It is not dangerous - I`d rather shark dive then do a rollercoaster ride.
There is a contoversy if shark diving is responsible for an increase in shark attacks. Personally I don`t believe that - there were always shark attacks in South Africa and the increase might as well be induced to the fact that more and more people practice watersports.
