Gastown, Vancouver: 69 reviews and 115 photos

Visit Gastown Vancouver and walk the streets there.
This is were Vancouver was founded in 1867, incorporated in 1886 and where it burnt to the ground later in the same year. It was originally called Gassy?s after the colourful saloon owner ? Gassy Jack Deighton. The village changed its name to Gastown after it was rebuilt from the fire. As the city grew it moved westward and changed its name to Vancouver and Gastown became Old Vancouver. Gastown then declined and was in danger of being destroyed. In 1971 the provincial government designated Gastown a heritage area and it was saved. Today it is a unique mix of mews, courtyards, boutiques restaurants and offices. The most interesting features of Gastown are the Victorian architecture and its shop lined cobbled streets. Also the Steam clock on Water street is interesting, it is the only one of its kind in the world. On Maple tree Square is a statue of ?Gassy Jack?.
