Kruje's economy flourished between 1700 and 1800 - there was a lot of commerce going on in the area and many goldsmiths moved into town. Many houses were built - and later many shops - not only goldsmiths.
Shops were built in wood along a cobbled tiny lane and were very quaint, as well as fragile. During the swecond world war they were all destroyed. The bazaar as we see it today is a perfect reconstruction (1960's and 1970's) of how it would have looked before the war.
The bazaar is now a great place to buy albanian souvenirs... Except for some which sell the usual tacky stuff that you can buy anywhere from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, most shops sell unique handicrafs, in particular boxes, centerpieces and carpets.
Directions: on your way towards the ruins of the castle
