"Tidbits about staying in Istanbul" Good Manners Tip by midnight_mike

Good Manners, Istanbul: 6 reviews and 3 photos

People who live in Istanbul identify more with Europe than Asia, but it is still a Muslim city. When you hear the call for prayer, stop talking and show respect. You might even stop what you are doing, although most of the locals do not do that.

Be sure not to confuse Turks with Arabs. They are two different people, with their own languages. Their food and culture are very similar, however. Do not mention anything about the Turkish massacre of Armenians during World War I. Also avoid any mention of conflicts between Greeks and Turks. If you befriend a Turk, you can certainly ask questions. Just be careful how you phrase the question.

Men should not wear tank tops or shirts with no sleeves. Women should not expose too much skin as it can cause a traffic accident. Men in Istanbul will stare at an attractive woman like they have never seen one before.
