The unofficial (and perhaps official) mascot of the Galapagos is the Blue-footed Booby. Although the least numerous of the three booby species found in the islands, Blue-footed Boobies are the most widespread. With breeding colonies throughout the islands, it is impossible to miss these comical birds. During courtship, the males skypoint and highstep, deliberately lifting their large, blue feet and waving them at their potential mate. Ungainly and clown-like on land, the boobies are anything but that in the air. By tucking in their long, pointed wings, they are able to turn their cigar-shaped bodies into missiles and plunge deep into the water to catch fish.
