The Michaelskirche is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. It was begun by Duke Wilhelm the Pious in 1583 and completed in 1597. When finished, Michaelskirche also claimed to have the second largest barrel-vaulted roof in the world. The church has a crypt were there are many notable if not notorious Bavarian figures entombed. They include Duke Wilhelm, "Mad" King Ludwig II and other members of the Wittelsbach family. The interior of the church is quite wonderful with excellent stucco work and a lovely pulpit (pictured). I suppose what drew me to the church was the fascinating facade which was quite unlike any other I saw in Germany.
The church is open from 7am to 7pm daily.
