From Christiania Torv take a path leading to the inside of the Akershus Fortress. Here you can walk freely on the fortress walls (but not untill late at night as they close the gates some time around 8pm- don't remember the exact time), enjoy the panoramic views of Oslo, view the inner yard with a picturesque pond and a summer stage, lie on the grass or sit on the canons. There are guided tours of the outdoor premises: for 15NOK you'll learn about the fortress' history and its ghoasts! These tours start from the information center in the inner yard at the following times: (19. June - 13. August) Mon ? Fri 10am, 12am, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, Sat ? Sun 12am, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm.
To give you an idea: this used to be a Medieval castle and Royal Residence dating from 1299. It was then developed into a fortress in 1592 after which it was rebuilt into a renaissance castle 1637-1648. The guided tours are also available for the interior part, where you can see castle halls, the Castle church, the Royal Mausoleum and models of the castle, Government's Reception Rooms and Banqueting Halls. I haven't taken this tour myself yet so maybe you'll meet me there one day:) The admission for the interior of the fortress is 50 (adults), 35 (students/seniors) and 10 (children), and the guided tour in English starts at 1pm
Adjacent to the Fortress by a bridge there is a square where military parades are sometimes held and the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum (free admission, opening hours see at http://www.mil.no/felles/fmu/start/museet/English/) is situated
