"Visit Portchester Castle." Portsmouth Things to Do Tip by margaretvn

Portsmouth Things to Do: 130 reviews and 270 photos

Portchester Castle is on the northern edge of the harbour. It is the best example of Roman sea defences in northern Europe; it was first fortified in the 3rd century. Later the Normans used the Roman walls to enclose a castle and a church (only the keep of the castle has survived).
The castle was used by Henry V as a garrison to assemble his troops before the Battle of Agincourt. The castle was a prisoner of war camp during the 18th and 19th centuries. The names, initials and dates of the prisoners are visible on the walls.
