Visit the Portsmouth historic Ships, the city?s dockyard.
It was once a vital naval port and although it is quieter these days, but it is a fascinating city because of the long naval history. Now known as the Portsmouth historic Ships, the city?s dockyard is the centre of the most important sights. One of the most important of these has to be the hull of the ?Mary Rose?; this was Henry VIII?s flagship. It capsized on its maiden voyage as it was leaving to fight the French in 1545. In 1982 it was recovered from the bottom of the sea. With it thousands of 16th century objects were recovered and they are now on display. They give a fascinating picture of life at sea 450 years ago. Near the ?Mary Rose? is HMS Victory; this is the flagship on which Admiral Nelson was killed during the Battle of Trafalgar. It has been restored to its former glory and there are tours around the ship regularly throughout the day. There is also the Royal Naval Museum, which shows naval history from the 16th century, and the 19th century HMS Warrior.
