Kleifarvatn from the air - in the distance
by Saagar

Due south of Raykjavik city, take off from the southbound Keflavik road just beyond Hafnarfjordur centre and head for the south coast on a minor, gravelly (soon!) road that passes through a very active geological area. It's a national park, and apart from the geothermal stuff at Kvisuvik and the southern end of Kleifarvatn, it is the Kleifarvatn itself that is the main attraction for amateurs. Desolate landscape, a lake mirroring surrounding volcanic debris and cliffs - stark and beautiful. Yes, bring a Björk tape to play while here - haunting.
If you have an idea of the volcanic activities here - read up before you go - the outcome of this trip is secured. Upon departing south from Kleifarvatn, you can choose to go either east or west, looping back up north toward Reykjavik again. Most interesting route is to the west (right), either backtracking on a parallel road on the other side of the ridge you came south along, or along the coast to Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon as a side option. It's a bit of a loop on gravelly roads, so be prepared.

Directions: From Hafnarfjordur on rd 42, Kleifarvatn lake after about 15 km.
Hit rd 427 east or west.
West, turn up Selsvallahals and Mohalsadalur for more volcanic stuff on the way back to Reykjavik.
