The BAPS Shree Swaminarayan Mandir is a Hindu temple located in Rexdale. This is an "attraction" that is rarely opened to the public. I in fact visited in 2005 during the Open-Doors festival. The BAPS Shree Swaminarayan Mandir is home of some of the most remarkable wooden sculpture that I have ever seen in Canada. The temple, which opened in 2004, was designed to look like a Haveli, a 17th century mansion common in India. The Mandir?s beautiful architecture begins with hundreds of figures of musicians, poets and dancers carved into the portico, welcoming all visitors in traditional Indian manner. The entrance hall features a richly hand-carved wooden foyer that opens into a magnificent courtyard with soaring wooden columns and panels. Hundreds of dancing peacocks, delicate lotus flowers and royal elephants beckon in greeting. Sadly photographs are not permitted inside of the Mandir. As mentioned I visited the temple during the Open-Doors festival which is held on the last weekend in May. During my visit, there were many performances and East Indian food was served outside in the parking lot. Be very careful about what you wear as this is a place of worship so dress with respect.
I highly recommend that you visit during the next such festival even if it means you have to travel out of the way. Rexdale is in the northwest end of Toronto. The BAPS Shree Swaminarayan Mandir is located on 62 Claireville Drive near Finch and Humberline Drive.
