This is really the centerpiece of the Citadel. The Mohammed Ali Mosque is modelled after the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. The most common similarity is the layered dome structure. Otherwise, the mosques are quite different. Here, one can find some commanding views of the city on the outside. The interior is rather dark, or at least it was during our visit. The courtyard is nice, and there is a clock tower which almost looks like it does not belong in a place like this. That clock tower was a gift from France in exchange for the obelisk that now stands in Concord Square. Unfortunately, the clock does not work. Although it is very popular with tourists and is on the tour bus route, it is still a working mosque. Therefore, mosque etiquette such as removing shoes is in effect here.
