  The Sphinx

It is easily understandable why this monument is always a favorite to visit. At the entrance, it lines up with the Khafre pyramid. Many speculate that the likeness of Khafre is the face on the Sphinx. Alas, it has suffered some damage over the years. The nose was likely broken off several hundreds of years ago long before the Ottomans or the French arrived in the area.

The origin of the Sphinx goes back to around 2500BC. It has the body of a lion and the head of a king. The paws and tail are visible. A little bit of restoration was taking place on the south side. It is my understanding that the Sphinx will be under gradual repair for some time. However, the scaffolding was minimal. As of July 2006, it was very easy to see the features of this monument. There is a temple that can be entered just in front of the Sphinx. After walking through, a visitor can walk to see the side profile all the way back to the tail. There are several points of view allowing a close look at the Sphinx. I recommend both the side profile and the head on view to help put this in perspective.

One of the entrance gates to the Giza plateau is located here, therefore it is possible that the Sphinx will be there to welcome you to the pyramids.
