Cork is derived from the Gealic "Corcaigh",(pronounce it: cork-ig) meaning marsh or bog and the city is built on a bog.it got it's charter as a city over 800 years ago from the the ruling British monarch,as Ireland was then under British rule.
County Cork is the bigest county of Ireland and Cork City is the 3rd largest city after Dublin and Belfast.
Tradition says that Cork was founded by Saint Finbarr in the 7th century.It was invaded by the Vikings in it's infancy and later ruled by Britain untill they were forced out by gurrilla warfare in 1921.
