This spot used to have a really bad reputation, but seems to be a success story for urban renewal. Set on a quiet tree-lined square smack in the middle of downtown, this unique place feels like it's from a European city. Hosting some Pittsburgh favorites like Primanti's and the Nicholas Coffee Company, along with local originals such as the 1902 Tavern, Market Square really has a lot to offer. We spent an hour or so at the Buon Giorno III Cafe, wandered around the square then moved on. I have also returned to visit Primanti's twice. There are several other cafes here including Nicholas Coffee Company and the Jenny Lee Bakery. There are a few bars/restaurants such as the Original Oyster House, Market Street Ale House, and several others. The area has a few small shops, but none that I can name off the top of my head.
The Square was created in 1764 when John Campbell mapped out the city plan. It was home to the first courthouse, the first jail and the first newspaper, the Post-Gazette, which was established in 1786.
Just down Market Street one block, you'll find PPG Place and the PPG Place Plaza. This are has a great fountain that kids play in all summer and it's turned into an ice skating rink in the winter. The other great thing about the square is its proximity to other central Pittsburgh destinations such as the theater district and Point State Park.
Market square is improving even more in 2008 with the addition of Dunkin Donuts and a cheese and desert bar.
Directions: Located just a few blocks east of Point State Park and a few blocks south of the Theater District next to PPG Place
