South Australia has many dirt roads. Take the road less travelled to see some fabulous country side. 4/4 wheel driving is a great way to get around on these roads but some are accessible to on road vehicles too. Although the roads are dirt they are mostly well maintained and can be quite smooth allowing you to travel at a decent speed. Beware though if you are inexperienced as smooth can mean slippery and can lead to you spinning out of control. Also keep an eye out for wildlife.
For a short trip you can find lots of dirt roads in the Adelaide hills. Mt Crawford is a nice place to spend an hour or so driving around the State pine forest. For longer trips take care. Always let someone know where you're going. The outback is harsh and you could find yourself in trouble if you take it for granted. If you do breakdown stay with your car so you are easily spotted. Do not venture on to private property. Stick to the public roads.
