Get ready. This is a stunning location -- a medieval town perched on the top of a craggy plateau just south of Avignon -- but the price you pay is that the narrow and otherwise picturesque streets will be full of tourists and souvenir shops hawking their wares. Moreover, there are few trees to be found, so the Provence sun will beat down upon you as you hike to the peak of the mountain to explore the castle and ruins of earlier civilizations.

Those warnings aside, it is still a very worthwhile trip. Our Michelin Guide gave Les Baux three stars -- one of only a few places with that many in all of Provence! As one walks to the top of the village, it is impossible not to imagine how many years workers must have toiled to build a village in that location -- directly into nad out of rock!

Even better, the bloody history of Les Baux is the stuff of horror movies. Pick up a guide book or pamphlet which will detail the ghastly goings-on of this town hundreds of years ago. Even for someone who reads a lot of medieval history for fun, I was impressed at the particularly violent past of this town!

Planning tip" Go early in the morning, tour the site while it's cool and your stomach is full, and then leave for a lunch back in the peaceful, tree-lined town of St. Remy de Provence, where you will find better food and better prices than on the mountain of Les Baux!

Address: Off the D27 south of Avignon
Directions: 15 km from Arles via the D17 and 25 km from Avignon via the D27.
