It is no real surprise that the longest place name in the UK, and indeed the longest URL on the Internet is somewhat manufactured. One of the earliest publicity stunts in fact. It was thought up in the 1860's to get the longest railway station name in the UK.

A whole economy grew from this stroke of genius as people made a brief stop at this otherwise quite unremarkable village on the way to or from the boat to Ireland leaving from Holyhead.

The train station has been restored to something like it's Victorian state, but the sign board remains the prime draw. Few trains stop here nowadays, although some stop on request to the conductor. Most visitors come by car and now get sucked into the surrounding 'shopping opportunities'. If you are heading by train, you will find it shortened to 'LLanfair P G' on timetables and booking forms.
