Oliver Cromwell, leader of the nation during our short republican period (after we beheaded Charles l and before we let Charles ll be king again), lived in Ely before he came to power. He and his family were resident from 1636 to 1647. His house has been restored, and contains 8 rooms as well as exhibitions on the English Civil War, the Fens and Cromwell's life. The tourist information office is also inside the house (entrance to this is free, but you have to pay to see the rest of the house).

Directions: Next to St Mary's church, near the cathedral.

Winter opening hours vary, but 10 - 5.30 daily from 1st April to 31st October.
