You won't miss Castle Hill. About an hour out from Christchurch, along a fairly straight stretch of road, the weird rock formations of Castle Hill attract a more or less permanent huddle of photographers. The area around here was used during the filming of the Lord of the Rings, and more recently (much further in than the rocks you can see from the road) the Chronicles of Narnia.

Regardless of any dubious cinema connections, the rocks are striking. The area is better known locally for it's rock climbing, and the Castle Hill holiday village.

Do stop, do take photos. Your friends at home won't forgive you if you don't.

Directions: About an hour out of Christchurch. With Christchurch to your back, the rock formations are on your left. There is enough of a layby for you to pull over quite safely.
